Wisdom Teeth Removal

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and final teeth to grow in the very back of your mouth and are also known as third molars. There are four wisdom teeth: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. You may get any combination of those, and some people never develop any.

Wisdom teeth usually emerge between the ages of 17 – 25. They are intended to help you chew your food more easily and are a valuable asset to the mouth when they are healthy and properly positioned. Unfortunately wisdom teeth are often misaligned or don’t grow in properly, causing impactions and painful dental complications.

Fighting for Space leads to Wisdom Teeth Problems

If there isn’t enough space for the wisdom teeth to grow at the back of your mouth, they can become impacted or misaligned. Wisdom teeth may grow in sideways, emerge only part way through the gum or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.

Impacted wisdom teeth may create an opening in the gum that often traps bacteria and can lead to infections in the gums and decay in the wisdom tooth or adjacent teeth. Impacted teeth can also cause jaw pain and stiffness.

Impacted wisdom tooth may need to be removed to stop possible crowding of other teeth and preserve your oral health.

Wisdom teeth causing pain

Jaw stiffness, limited mouth opening, pain in your back teeth and swelling of the gums at the back of the mouth are typical signs of an impacted wisdom tooth. If you notice these persistent symptoms you should have your dentist check your wisdom teeth immediately.

Citra dentists can help determine whether it is necessary to remove your wisdom teeth. Each patient’s situation is unique and the dentist will take x-rays and discuss your particular needs with you. If removal of your wisdom teeth is recommended, it is best to have them removed sooner than later. If you postpone the treatment, there is a greater chance of further complications developing. If you have your wisdom tooth causing pain or any concerns, schedule a consultation with your Citra Dentist today.

Wisdom tooth removal

Citra dentists are well trained at wisdom teeth removal however sometimes a referral to an oral surgeon may be necessary. The procedure is usually done under local anaesthesia, which completely numbs the teeth and gums. On some occasions, general anaesthetic may be suggested. Your dentist will discuss the best recommendation with you at the initial consultation.

The healing process begins once the teeth have been extracted. We will provide care instructions to ensure proper healing. However, many people experience some pain and swelling after the surgery which will normally subside after a few days.

During the first 24 hours, your gums may continue to bleed slightly. Some of the activities* you can do to improve the healing process:

  • Bite down on a gauze pad and change it when they become moistened with blood.
  • Place an ice pack on the outside of your cheek to help reduce swelling.
  • Eat only soft foods and avoid drinking out of a straw, as the sucking motion can loosen the clot.
  • Use painkillers, prescribed by the dentist, to help ease any discomfort.
  • Prop up your head with pillows to improve the healing process.
  • Refrain from strenuous exercise during this period to prevent excessive bleeding.
Bleeding should stop after 24 hours. If you have prolonged or severe pain, swelling, bleeding or fever, call your dentist immediately.
