Dental Implants
Dental implants support a dental crown or a dental bridge or a partial dentures mimicking the look and feel of a natural tooth.

With success rates of over 95% dental implants are most commonly used to replace one or many missing teeth. They are surgical fixtures that are considered to be the closest thing to a natural tooth. They are also preferred because they act as a substitute for a tooth root without impacting the neighbouring tooth.

Dental Implant Placement Surgery
Dental implant placement surgery is a transformative procedure designed to replace missing teeth, providing patients with a durable and aesthetically pleasing solution. Here, we will explore the process of dental implant placement, the types of implants, the surgical procedure involved, and the significance of implant crowns in achieving a natural appearance and functionality.
Dental implants consist of three main components: the implant post, the abutment, and the implant crown. The implant post, typically made of titanium, is surgically inserted into the jawbone, serving as a root for the replacement tooth. The abutment is a connector placed on top of the implant post, which holds the implant crown. The implant crown is the visible part of the tooth, custom-made to match the patient’s natural teeth in shape and colour.
Reasons for Dental Implant Surgery
They are an excellent option for individuals who have lost teeth due to various reasons, including decay, injury, or periodontal disease. Unlike traditional dentures, which can slip and cause discomfort, dental implants provide a stable and permanent solution. They help preserve the jawbone, prevent facial sagging, and restore proper chewing function, leading to improved overall oral health and quality of life.
The dental implant placement surgery involves several steps, which may vary based on individual needs and the specific techniques used by the dentist here at Citra.
- Initial Consultation and Planning: Before the surgery, a thorough evaluation is conducted, including X-rays and 3D imaging, to assess the condition of the jawbone and determine the ideal implant placement. The dentist will discuss the patient’s medical history, preferences, and any necessary preparatory procedures, such as bone grafting if the jawbone lacks sufficient density.
- Anesthesia Administration: On the day of the surgery, local anaesthesia is administered to ensure the patient is comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure. Sedation options may also be offered for patients with anxiety.
- Implant Placement: We make a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the jawbone. A hole is drilled into the bone, where the titanium implant post is placed. The gum tissue is then sutured over the implant, allowing it to integrate with the bone during a healing period known as osseointegration. This process usually takes several months, during which the bone grows around the implant, providing stability.
- Abutment Placement: Once osseointegration is complete, a second minor surgery is performed to place the abutment. The gum tissue is reopened, and the abutment is attached to the implant post. The gums are then closed around the abutment, leaving it exposed for the crown to be placed.
- Crown Fabrication and Placement: After the gums have healed, impressions of the mouth are taken to create a custom-made implant crown. The crown is designed to match the size, shape, and colour of the surrounding teeth, ensuring a natural appearance. Once fabricated, the crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment, completing the restoration.
Benefits of Dental Implants and Crowns
Dental implants and their crowns offer several advantages:
- Durability: With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, making them a cost-effective solution in the long run.
- Functionality: Implants restore full chewing capability, allowing individuals to enjoy their favourite foods without restrictions.
- Aesthetics: Custom crowns provide a natural look, enhancing the patient’s smile and confidence.
- Bone Preservation: Implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss that often occurs with missing teeth
Dental implant placement surgery is a highly effective solution for tooth loss, combining advanced surgical techniques with innovative dental technology. The collaboration between implant posts and crowns ensures that patients receive not only functional restorations but also aesthetically pleasing results. As dental implant technology continues to advance, more individuals will have the opportunity to restore their smiles and regain their confidence, making dental implants a valuable investment in oral health and overall well-being.
